Beechwood is a white-rendered mid-terrace cottage in the centre of Arrochar, at the head of Loch Long and directly beneath the Arrochar Alps. A front garden faces the hills, and the rear garden is enclosed enough that your dog can be off-lead while you get the kettle on.
The village sits right inside the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. The Cobbler, the most recognisable peak in the southern Highlands, starts its main ascent route from a car park three minutes up the road. Beinn Narnain and Ben Vane start from the same spot. These are proper mountains, not manicured trails, and coming back to a warm cottage in the village afterwards is half the appeal.
Back at Beechwood, the kitchen earns its place. It is better stocked than most self-catering lets: a full set of pots and pans, a large soup pot, a proper oven and hob, a dishwasher, and enough worktop space to spread out and cook properly. After eight hours on the hills, that matters. The breakfast bar seats two comfortably for morning porridge, and the dining area handles four.
The living room is bright and simply furnished, with a Freeview Smart TV for evenings when the weather has already had the last word. Upstairs, the double bedroom faces the front with mountain glimpses through the dormer window. The twin room sleeps two more, making Beechwood work for a couple, a pair of friends, or a small family. The shower room was recently refurbished, with a proper walk-in shower.
One dog is welcome, and the enclosed rear garden is a genuine perk. Your dog can potter about off-lead while you sit outside with a coffee between walks. From the garden gate, you can walk straight along the lochside and into the hills beyond.
Arrochar village is small but well served. The Village Inn is dog-friendly in the bar area and does a steak and venison pie worth planning your evening around, with Fyne Ales on draught. The village shop carries local meats, pies, and all the usual groceries. A handful of waterside restaurants sit along the loch. Helensburgh, with its full high street and cafes, is half an hour south by car.
For days away from the summits, Tarbet and Loch Lomond's western shore sit barely two miles north, and Inveraray, with its castle and harbourside, is forty minutes west over the Rest and Be Thankful. But the honest draw here is the walking. The Alps are the reason to book, the cottage is the reason you sleep well after them, and the village is the reason you don't need to drive anywhere in the evening.
